Birmingham Royal Ballet: Virtual Stage
Ballet Herald, The Virtual Stage: Birmingham Royal Ballet.

As assistant and camera operator for Clive Booth, we collaborated with The Royal Birmingham Ballet, Canon, and Bloomsbury Philanthropies. Creating a virtual stage experience through a groundbreaking initiative that not only enhances the accessibility and interaction of ballet, but also brings a new dimension to immersive storytelling. Here's an overview of this remarkable project:

Enhancing Accessibility: Traditional ballet performances often have limited accessibility, primarily due to geographical constraints or physical limitations. By leveraging virtual reality (VR) technology, this project breaks down those barriers. It enables individuals worldwide to access and enjoy ballet productions as if they were physically present in the theatre, making this beautiful art form available to a broader and more diverse audience.

Immersive Storytelling: Immersive storytelling is about creating an experience where the viewer is at the centre of the narrative. It allows each person to have a unique and personalised experience. With the use of the Canon RF 5.2mm F/2.6 L Dual Fisheye VR lens, the project achieves an unparalleled level of immersion. It places the viewer right in the middle of the ballet dancer's experience, allowing them to feel like they are part of the performance.

Technical Innovation: The choice of a 3-camera setup, capturing both the stage and behind-the-scenes moments, is pivotal in creating a comprehensive and visually stunning VR experience. This approach not only showcases the dance itself but also provides a glimpse into the intricate preparations and emotions of the performers, resulting in shots that resemble moving paintings.

Community Engagement: The project's commitment to community engagement is evident in its first screening for the Freefall Dance company, which is Birmingham Royal Ballet's company of dancers with learning disabilities. The VR experience opens up a new world of possibilities for individuals who might face challenges attending traditional performances. It allows them to explore the VR world and immerse themselves in the beauty of ballet, demonstrating the inclusive nature of this initiative.

Educational Outreach: Premiering "A Swan's Story" throughout West Midlands Schools is an exceptional way to introduce ballet to a young and impressionable audience. By using immersive VR technology, students can engage with ballet in an entirely novel way, potentially sparking a lifelong appreciation for the art form. This educational outreach aspect ensures that the project has a lasting impact on the local community.

Future Applications: The excitement generated by the Freefall Dance company's response to the VR film hints at the myriad of future applications for this medium. Beyond ballet, VR storytelling can be utilised in various fields, from education to entertainment, providing immersive experiences and insights previously unattainable through traditional media.

This collaboration between The Royal Birmingham Ballet, Canon, and Bloomsbury Philanthropies represents a powerful convergence of art, technology, and accessibility. It expands the reach of ballet, immerses viewers in the world of dance, and offers a glimpse into a future where immersive storytelling can transform the way we experience and appreciate the performing arts. It's not just about capturing the beauty of ballet; but using innovation to make that beauty accessible to all.

IDEAS FOUNDATION

Anchor Ideas 3

Working with the Ideas Foundation on projects for the Queen's Jubilee and the King's Coronation has been an exceptional opportunity to engage with and empower young people from underprivileged schools across the United Kingdom. This collaboration not only fosters creativity but also leaves a lasting legacy of inspiration and achievement. Here's an elaboration on this remarkable initiative and its legacy:

Empowering Young Talent: The partnership with the Ideas Foundation is about more than just producing creative content. It's about recognising and nurturing the immense potential that young people from underprivileged schools possess. By providing them with a platform to express their creativity, your instilling confidence and belief in their abilities.

Real-World Experience: Through visual storytelling workshops, these young individuals are exposed to real-world scenarios. They are given a tangible project with a clear brief, mirroring the kind of challenges they might encounter in their future careers. This hands-on experience is invaluable in preparing them for the world beyond the classroom.

Collaboration with ClearChannel: Collaborating with ClearChannel is a significant aspect of this initiative. ClearChannel is a prominent outdoor advertising company with a widespread presence in major cities throughout the UK. Having the opportunity to showcase their work through such a reputable and extensive platform is an incredible boost for these students.

Visibility and Recognition: When the projects are displayed in major cities around the UK, it not only offers visibility to the creative work of these young talents but also celebrates their accomplishments. This recognition is a source of pride for the students, their schools, and their communities, reinforcing the belief that their voices matter.

Legacy of Inspiration: The legacy of this initiative goes beyond the immediate projects. It inspires young people to pursue creative and ambitious endeavors in the future. The notion that their work can be seen by thousands of people and that their ideas can make a real impact lingers in their minds, encouraging them to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals.

Addressing Inequality: Working with underprivileged schools and providing them with opportunities they might not have access to otherwise addressing issues of educational inequality. At these schools there is a leaning towards STEM subjects we level the playing field by offering these students the chance to explore their creative talents and potentially pursue careers they might not have considered before.

Building a Supportive Network: Beyond the workshops and projects, the connections formed with mentors, peers, and professionals in the creative industry are invaluable. These connections can serve as a support network for these young talents as they navigate their future paths.

In conclusion, working with the Ideas Foundation on projects for the Queen's Jubilee and the King's Coronation is not just about the creative output; it's about the lasting impact on the lives of young people. The legacy of this initiative is one of empowerment, inspiration, and the belief that every young person, regardless of their background, has the potential to make a meaningful contribution to society through their creativity and talent.

ALTER

Alter was a fantastic wellness day that we organised for a charitable cause, and was a well-rounded event aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being while also raising money for a charitable cause.

The primary goal of Alter was to raise money for two important causes: the Outward Bound Group and our London Marathon charity place. We had a commitment to supporting charitable organisation's and engaging in community-driven initiatives.

The day was filled with a variety of activities aimed at promoting physical and mental wellness. These activities included:

Yoga, known for its ability to enhance flexibility, strength, and mindfulness. We used it as a great way to promote physical and mental well-being.

Meditation helps individuals relax, reduce stress, and improve their mental focus and clarity. It's a valuable practice for overall mental health.

Breath work techniques can help with stress management and relaxation by focusing on controlled breathing patterns.

Reiki is a form of energy healing that aims to balance and harmonise the body's energy. It can promote relaxation and stress reduction.

Providing nutritious food and drinks is essential for overall well-being. It ensured that participants have the energy they need to engage in the day's activities.

Sponsors: The event had the support of various sponsors, which is crucial for making such events a success:

VitMedics: A supplement company provided products that could complement participants' wellness routines.

Fresh Choice: A fruit and veg shop supplied fresh and healthy ingredients for the event, ensuring that participants had access to nutritious options.

High Water: A hard seltzer company contributed to the event's enjoyable conclusion, allowing participants to relax and socialise while supporting the cause. It was important for us to create an enjoyable and social atmosphere. The involvement of sponsors like High Water and the emphasis on "having a good time at the end” meant had an opportunity to unwind, connect with others, and celebrate their commitment to wellness and charity.

Overall, Alter was a well-organised and holistic wellness day that catered to the physical, mental, and social needs of its participants while also serving a charitable purpose. It not only promoted health and well-being but also fostered a sense of community and generosity. Events like this are not only beneficial for those who attend but also for the causes they support.

FUNWE SEED

Photographing for Funwe Seed, a seed company in Malawi involved in a government scheme to provide drought and heatwave-resistant crops. I found this an impactful endeavour that allowed me to give back to a society facing agricultural challenges. Here's an elaboration on this valuable initiative:

Documenting Agricultural Innovation: My role as a photographer for Funwe Seed involved documenting the innovative work being done by this seed company. This documentation is essential for showcasing the efforts to develop crops that are resilient to climate change-related challenges such as drought and heatwaves. My photographs become a visual record of the company's contributions to agricultural sustainability.

Raising Awareness: Through my photography, I have had the opportunity to raise awareness about the critical issues Malawi and other regions face due to climate change. My images highlight the impact of these environmental challenges on agriculture, food security, and livelihoods. By sharing these stories, I have contributed to a global understanding of the need for sustainable agricultural practices.

Advocating for Change: Visual storytelling has the power to influence policymakers, organisation's, and individuals. My photographs can be used as advocacy tools to call for support, funding, and policy changes that benefit smallholder farmers in Malawi. By visually representing the struggles and successes of these farmers, I have been a catalyst for positive change.

Empowering Local Communities: The work with Funwe Seed directly impacts the local community in Malawi. By showcasing the company's efforts and the benefits of drought and heatwave-resistant crops, I hope to  empower local farmers with knowledge and hope.

Cultural Exchange: Working in a different country and culture provided me with a unique opportunity for cross-cultural exchange. My interactions with local farmers and communities deepened my understanding of their way of life, traditions, and challenges. This cultural exchange enriched my perspective as a photographer and as a global citizen.

Personal Fulfilment: Beyond the tangible impacts, this project was personally fulfilling. It allowed me to use my skills and knowledge for a greater purpose, aligning your passion for photography with social and environmental causes. Knowing that my work contributes to improving the lives of others can be deeply rewarding.

My role as a photographer for Funwe Seed in Malawi was not just about capturing images; it was about being a catalyst for change, an advocate for sustainability, and a source of inspiration for local communities. Through my lens, I had  the power to tell powerful stories that resonate globally and contribute to the broader conversation on climate resilience and agricultural innovation. My work with Funwe Seed is a testament to the positive impact photography can have on society and the world at large.
